Since independence in 1956, Sudan has invariably experienced heightened degrees of fragility. Various governance regimes lacked the ability to carry out basic governance functions. In particular, these regimes seem to have had a constrained ability to forge legitimate social contracts and hence build constructive relations with society. Most importantly, various governments since independence lacked the ability to provide basic security and therefore failed to be viewed as the overarching authority within Sudan’s geographic borders.
Over the past three decades, levels of Sudan’s fragility increased tremendously due to the policies of the current government. This has been manifested in increased levels of violence, lack of justice, incapacitated institutions and inability to provide economic foundations such as youth employment, economic, social and political inclusion. The current regime has been unwilling to mediate relations between various citizen groups and the state resulting in making the populations vulnerable to conflict, poverty and external shocks such as natural disasters and epidemics.
Two months ago, protests have erupted in the city of Atbara and massively spread in scale and numbers across many parts of Sudan. Thousands of peaceful protesters demanding freedom, justice and equality have been facing police violence, killing, tear gas, and mass arrests. The peaceful uprising is continuously unabated today!
